Fish
Judy B. Freeman Pottery
I love making teapots! It's a multi-step process that takes weeks to complete. Each teapot starts out as lumps of clay. I throw a hollow ring form and a cylinder that I facet with a stretched out spring. After they've set up a bit I start cutting and join the two together and go to work making hand formed additions that bring the fish to life. All of my fish, so far, are female, so they have plump lips adorned with lipstick colors, long high temperature wire eyelashes and most have earrings that adorn their fins. After the construction phase there's a lengthy drying time and then the first firing. I then go to work painting the fish with non-toxic glazes. Most of my fish are made to resemble an actual reef fish counterpart. Then the fish is fired a second time. Several of my fish go in for more firings depending upon whether there is mother-of-pearl or metallic lusters or special effects from glaze layering. After the final firing there may be some gluing involved if the fish has beaded wire tendrils coming off the dorsal fin or if there are rhinestones added to the sunglasses. Most folks are amazed when they learn that these are not made from a mold. A lengthy process but well worth the wait!
My teapots are not suitable for the microwave oven or dishwasher. They are functionally decorative- meaning that they have all the elements of a teapot but are at their best as a decorative teapot.
